NEW DELHI: Days after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared a state of emergency, ostensibly in response to the economic crisis owing to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó met External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Friday.

“A real pleasure to welcome FM Péter Szijjártó of Hungary to New Delhi. Look forward to our discussions on bilateral matters and global affairs,” Dr Jaishankar tweeted.

Szijjártó also joined in a business forum with Meenakshi Lekhi, Union minister of state for external affairs and culture.

The India-Hungary Business Forum was organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) in collaboration with the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi.

The bilateral trade between the two countries is poised to breach the USD 1bn mark, said an official from FICCI.

FICCI also signed an investment promotion agreement with the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency to promote trade and investment between India and Hungary.

The visit of the Hungarian Foreign Minister happened in the background of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In a video, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary recently remarked that the war in Ukraine remains a constant threat to the country.

Hungary also played a key role in the evacuation of Indians from Ukraine. The country extended support to India during its evacuation Operation Ganga, bringing back stranded citizens, especially students from besieged Ukraine. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri went to the Hungarian capital Budapest to oversee the evacuation operation in person.
