NEW DELHI: Amid a string of desertions hitting the West Bengal unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with prominent leaders leaving the party to join Trinamool Congress (TMC), its national secretary Anupam Hazra on Monday called for introspection.

Hazra’s comments came after West Bengal BJP vice-president Arjun Singh re-joined TMC in the presence of the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee at his office in South Kolkata on Sunday.

“I have returned to my home. I was here (TMC) from the very beginning. Due to a few misunderstandings, I left TMC to join BJP. One cannot practice politics in Bengal sitting in air-conditioned rooms and through Facebook…,” Singh had said.

Taking on to social media Anupam Hazra wrote, “Whenever anybody leaves the party, rather than consoling each other by saying all is well, it won’t have any impact or harm in the party… it is better to introspect why party members are leaving after joining BJP. It makes no sense not to accept the reality.”

Reacting to Hazra’s comments, Dilip Ghosh, who is also one of the national vice-presidents of BJP, said, “We have given responsibly to such people, they should introspect what they have contributed to the party? I am challenging whoever is talking big to list what they have contributed to the party? Statements on social media does not help.”

Prominent BJP faces such as Mukul Roy and Babul Supriyo have left the party to re-join TMC, which is the ruling party in Bengal.

Senior leaders Rajib Banerjee and Sabyasachi Dutta also returned to TMC after a brief stint with BJP.

“Someone who at present is an MP (Arjun Singh), who successfully helped his son win as an MLA, his leaving the party does matter. It does make a difference. It will make the party suffer more,” says Hazra while speaking to the media at his Delhi residence.

Hazra also stated that the party has reached a point when Bengal BJP is facing a hard time in winning municipal elections, and Arjun Singh’s joining TMC will have a detrimental effect.

Earlier, while talking to The New Indian, BJP’s Dilip Ghosh, the national vice-president said, “He (Arjun Singh) can say better why he went back. But I think he returned to the party (TMC) after failing to tolerate TMC’s high-handedness. When he joined BJP many of his businesses were stopped from functioning, now he simply surrendered.”
