2nd India-Nordic Summit: PM Modi Discusses Climate, Economy, Security

COPENHAGEN: Climate change, post-pandemic economy and global security are at the top of the plate as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his counterparts from the Nordic countries for the 2nd India-Nordic Summit in Denmark on Wednesday.

PM Modi met Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir of Iceland, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson of Sweden, Prime Minister Sanna Marin of Finland and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store of Norway for the summit-level talks. India is the only country, apart from the US, that holds summit-level talks with the Nordic nations.

“The India-Nordic Summit gave a great platform to discuss ways to boost ties with the Nordic nations. The bilateral meetings with Nordic leaders were also productive. I look forward to working with them in various sectors aimed at furthering prosperity,” PM Modi stated in a tweet after the day-long summit.

“The India-Nordic Summit will go a long way in boosting India’s ties with the region. Together, there is much that our nations can achieve and contribute to global prosperity and sustainable development,” PM Modi stated.

Before leaving Copenhagen, PM Modi said, “My Denmark visit has been excellently productive. The programmes covered different spheres ranging from diplomatic meetings, boosting cultural and commercial linkages and engagement with the Indian community. I thank PM Frederiksen, the Government and the people of Denmark.”

“A boost to our multifaceted cooperation with the Nordic region in areas like emerging technologies, investment, clean energy, Arctic research and more,” Arindam Bagchi, Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden together form a strong and wealthy Nordic economy. All of them are placed among the 20 countries in the world with the highest GDP per capita. Denmark, Sweden, and Finland are in the European Union and the remaining two, Norway and Iceland, are members of the European Economic Area.

Wrapping up his Europe visit, on his way to India, Prime Minister Modi will also make a brief stopover for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
