NEW DELHI: With an eye on enhancing bilateral cooperation with its neighbours, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will begin a three-day visit to Bangladesh and Bhutan on Thursday.

Dr Jaishankar is slated to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and his counterpart Dr AK Abdul Momen tomorrow in Dhaka, MEA said on Wednesday.
The visit occurs at a time when the two nations commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties. It is also learnt that Dr Jaishankar’s visit is also aimed at preparing grounds for a visit to India by the Bangladeshi PM.

From Bangladesh, EAM will travel to Bhutan. “It will be Bhutan’s first high-level visitor from abroad since March 2020 (when they closed down the border for COVID-19), reflecting the great importance both countries attach to this bilateral relationship,” MEA stated in a statement.

During the state visit, Dr Jaishankar will hold discussions with Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, and Lyonchhen Lotay Tshering, the Prime Minister of Bhutan and call on Foreign Minister of Bhutan Lyonpo Tandi Dorji.

“During the visit, the two sides will discuss all issues of mutual interest, including the upcoming high-level exchanges, economic development and hydro-power cooperation,” MEA said.
