NEW DELHI: The Disciplinary Committee of the Congress has issued a show-cause notice to senior Punjab Congress leader Sunil Jakhar and the party’s Kerala unit leader KV Thomas for going against the party line.

The committee headed by senior party leader and former Defence Minister AK Antony has given Jakhar and Thomas a week to reply to the complaint against them.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in charge of Punjab, Harish Chaudhary, had written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi seeking action against the former PPCC chief for his recurring remarks, including the ones against former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Speaking to the media, Committee member secretary Tariq Anwar said, “The show-cause notice has been issued to Jakhar following the Punjab affairs in-charge’s complaint over his remarks during the assembly elections.”

“The committee examined the statements and has issued the show-cause notice as per the constitution of the party, giving him one week to reply. If the reply is not found to be satisfactory, action will be taken,” he added.

The AK Antony-headed panel’s move against Thomas came after the party leadership in Kerala sought action against him for attending a seminar organised by the CPM on the sidelines of its national conclave in Kannur.

Shashi Tharoor and Thomas both were invited to the CPM programme but Tharoor accepted the party line and did not attend.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi, newly-appointed Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said Congress party will not tolerate indiscipline and strict action would be taken against those who make any public comment against it.

“Whether it’s a senior leader or a junior, there will be zero tolerance for indiscipline. They (party leaders/workers) may have problem with me or with any of us. But that shouldn’t mean that they can say anything on a public platform. It also doesn’t mean that they will tweet. That won’t be tolerated,” he said.

Warring further said, “I met Sonia Gandhi. She has asked us (Punjab leaders) to go and meet people, strengthen the party and identify the problems as to why we lost and then fight for them.”
