NEW DELHI: Wang Yi , China’s Foreign Minister and State Councillor reportedly reached New Delhi on Thursday for the first time after the Galwan valley face-off in 2020. His visit occurs at a time when China is arranging the BRICS Summit later this year. China will most likely urge India for talks on Russia-India-China Forum as well, experts opined.

Foreign Minister Yi will most likely meet his counterpart in India as well as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

China retained the BRICS Chairmanship from India in January 2022. The last two BRICS summits were held virtually by Russia and India due to the outbreak of pandemic. The 14th BRICS summit will be themed Foster High-Quality BRICS Partnership Usher in a New Era for Global Development. The two states sent their representatives at the Corps Commander-level meeting on the ground along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on March 11.

Soon after the air crash in China on March 21, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the crash of the passenger flight MU5735 with 132 on board in China’s Guangxi. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the crash and their family members.”

Speaking to The New Indian earlier on recent developments on Sino-Indian relations, Commodore (retired) Seshadri Vasan, Director General of Chennai Centre for China Studies said, “All that it has done is to prevent escalation which is not bad but, it does not help the cause of normalisation. China would continue to try and apply pressure and is unlikely to work to resolve this issue that has remained sore for decades.”

Foreign Minister Yi arrived in India on a surprise visit from Kabul. While in Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi of the Taliban and Foreign Minister Wang Yi mulled over a broad range of issues including political, economic and transit issues, the corridor, dried fruit exports, scholarships, as well as visas.
