KHATKAR KALAN (PUNJAB): AAP leader Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday made an emotional appeal to all Punjabis not to leave the state to settle in foreign countries as he took oath as the 17th chief minister of Punjab at a grand function in Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

Addressing a massive gathering after taking the oath, Mann appealed to the people of Punjab to work for rebuilding Punjab, and not migrate to other countries.

“Bhagat Singh was not just concerned about India getting freedom but also the hands the country will go into once it is free. And his concerns were valid. We are going abroad to those from whom we took our freedom,” he said.

“We will stay in our country and work for its betterment. From unemployment to farming, we will find solutions to all problems,” he told the gathering.

He said that the AAP government will work towards eradicating unemployment and corruption and build good hospitals and schools in the state.

In his first address after being sworn-in, Chief Minister Mann stated that his government will treat even those who did not vote for the AAP in the recently-held assembly elections equally. “We are also the government for those who didn’t vote for us and we will work for them too,” he said.

Thanking the people of Punjab for giving an overwhelming majority to the AAP, he said that the party is also fighting to take freedom to people like Bhagat Singh and other freedom fighters. “It will take many lives to pay back the love we have received from you,” Mann said.

The AAP leader, who recently resigned as a member of Lok Sabha, said his government will hit the ground running. “The state has already lost a lot of time. This government will start working from today onwards,” he said and sought public cooperation.

The AAP secured a landslide victory, winning 92 of 117 assembly seats in the assembly elections, counting for which was held on March 10. Punjab is the second state in India to witness a government of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other leaders across the political spectrum congratulated Mann on his oath-taking.

“Congratulations to Shri Bhagwant Mann Ji on taking oath as Punjab CM. Will work together for the growth of Punjab and welfare of the state’s people,” the PM tweeted.
