“We Did Open Fire In The Air To Save Civilians”: Bandipora Terror Attack Survivor

Srinagar: The four Bandipora terror attack survivors opened fire in the air to save civilians who were present around the spot when terrorist hurled a grenade on them on Friday.

A policeman of Jammu & Kashmir Police was killed and four others including a Border Security Force (BSF) Assistant Sub-Inspector ( ASI) had suffered injuries after terrorists hurled a grenade on the security forces in Bandipora area of northern Kashmir.

Zubair Ahmad Shah, a special police officer (SPO) of  Papchan Bandipora was killed while the injured have been identified as Head Constable Muhammad Shafi, Constable Muhammad Yasir, Constable Rayees Ahmad and ASI Umesh Singh of BSF.

“We did not open direct fire as there was a rush of civilians in the area,” one of saviour-policeman- told General Officer Commanding, 15 Corps, Lt General D P Pandey.

Lt Gen Pandey visited 92 Base Hospital of Army at BB Cant where saviours are being treated for splinter injuries.

A survivor who also happens to be policeman said that they tried to save their colleague who was grievously wounded in the terror attack.

The ASI of BSF is eager to join his duties. “Once I am discharged, I will join my duties again,” he added.

The incident had taken place after unknown number of terrorists hurled a grenade at joint Naka party of Police and BSF near Nishat Park in Bandipora. The grenade had exploded on the intended target, resulting into the splinter injuries to five security forces personnel.

They were removed to hospital, however, Zubair was declared dead on arrival.  Zubair was driving the mobile bunker of Bandipora police.

Soon after the incident, a massive search operation was launched to nab the culprits. Operation was underway when this report was being filed.

“At about 1700 hrs, terrorists hurled a grenade on a joint party of Police & BSF in Bandipora resulting in martyrdom of one police personnel and injuries to 04 other police personnel

Senior officers reached at the terror crime spot”, police said.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that terrorists hurled a grenade upon the Naka party near Nishat Park in Bandipora in which 05 Police/BSF personnel received splinter injuries and were evacuated to hospital,” Police had said. “However, among the injured police personnel Zubair Ahmad succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom, while as the condition of other injured personnel is stable”, police added.
