NEW DELHI: Mumbai Police arrested the prime accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national. This marks the third arrest in the case, which has been under intense investigation since the attack on January 16, 2025. The accused will be produced before the court today, where the police are expected to seek his custodial remand for further investigation.

The incident occurred when an intruder broke into Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence and attacked him with a knife, causing severe injuries to his spine, neck, and arms. The actor was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He is currently stable and recovering under medical supervision.

The latest arrest was made in Thane, the accused had been hiding under the alias Vijay Das. According to the police, Shehzad entered India illegally and had been living in the country without valid identification documents. He was reportedly working as a labourer to avoid detection and had recently moved to Mumbai’s outskirts after staying in the city earlier.

This arrest follows the detention of two other suspects—one in Mumbai and another in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district. However, their exact involvement in the case is still under investigation. Police believe that Shehzad is the mastermind behind the attack, and his interrogation could provide crucial details about the motive and any possible accomplices.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may have been financially motivated, as the accused had been unemployed for some time. Reports indicate that he entered Saif Ali Khan’s residence with the intent to commit theft but ended up attacking the actor when confronted.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with fans and the film fraternity expressing concerns about the safety of public figures. Authorities are now focusing on tightening security measures and addressing issues related to illegal immigration and identity fraud.

The Mumbai Police have assured the public of a thorough investigation and are committed to ensuring justice for Saif Ali Khan. Further updates are expected following today’s court proceedings.
