NEW DELHI: Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the new Congress headquarters, Indira Bhawan, in the national capital today, January 15. The headquarters is named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal, treasurer Ajay Maken, CWC members, state chief ministers, former chief ministers, PCC presidents, and other leaders.
Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for Indira Bhawan on December 28, 2009, during the party’s 125th foundation day. In his address, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized the significance of Indira Bhawan as a “beacon of hope, energy, and inspiration” for party workers.
Kharge said that Indira Bhawan, the new party headquarters, will serve as a beacon of hope, energy, and inspiration for Congress workers who are fighting every day for the party’s ideology. The Congress president condemned the recent statement by RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, who said that the country did not get real independence on August 15, 1947, but on the day the Ram Temple was inaugurated in Ayodhya.

Speaking on the occasion, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, said that it was quite symbolic that, while Congress was inaugurating its new headquarters, the RSS Chief claimed India did not achieve independence on August 15, 1947. He said this was an act of treason, and the RSS chief could be arrested for saying such things in any other country.
“What he (Bhagwat) said yesterday is treason because, if he is stating that the Constitution is invalid and the fight against the British was invalid, then it’s treason. In any other country, one would be arrested and tried,” he pointed out while asserting, “to say that India didn’t get independence in 1947 is an insult to every single Indian. And it’s time we stop listening to such nonsense.”
