NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, the Congress party has promised the Purvanchali community to elevate the celebration of Chhath Mahaparv to the grandeur of the Kumbh Mela if it forms the next government.
In a statement posted on X, Congress assured the public of its dedication to organizing the festival with unparalleled joy. The party announced plans to designate a specific area along the Yamuna riverbank for Chhath celebrations and to accord it the status of a district.
Additionally, Congress proposed naming the designated ghat after the late renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha, whose contributions to Bhojpuri and Maithili music have immortalized her as a cultural icon of the Purvanchali community.
The party also promised to address all logistical and infrastructural needs for the festival, ensuring its seamless organization.
This move is seen as an attempt to woo Purvanchali voters, who constitute a significant proportion of Delhiās electorate. Congress leaders emphasized that celebrating Chhath Mahaparv on such a grand scale would not only honour the faith of the community but also position Delhi as a hub of cultural diversity.
The Delhi Assembly election is scheduled to be held on February 8 across all 70 constituencies in a single phase.

The promise comes amid criticism from the BJP, which has accused the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of failing to clean the Yamuna.
The Congress is campaigning with the slogan, āHogi Har Zarurat Poori, Congress Hai Zarooriā, and has announced several key schemes under its election promise, “Congress Guarantee for Delhi.” These include the Pyari Didi Yojana, which provides ā¹2,500 per month as financial assistance to women; the Jeevan Raksha Yojana, offering free medical treatment coverage of up to ā¹25 lakh; and the Yuva Udaan Yojana, designed to empower youth with a one-year apprenticeship program along with a monthly stipend of ā¹8,500.
