New Delhi: In a momentous achievement for the world of chess, Gukesh Dommaraju has etched his name into history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at just 18 years old. He defeated defending champion Ding Liren of China in a thrilling final game of the 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship held in Singapore. His remarkable journey from a young chess enthusiast to a global champion has captured the imagination of millions.
Gukesh’s chess journey began at the tender age of six when he first learned the game. His extraordinary talent soon became evident as he rose rapidly through the ranks. By the age of 10, he earned the prestigious International Master (IM) title, followed by the Grandmaster (GM) title at 12, making him one of the youngest GMs in history. His relentless pursuit of excellence and unwavering focus propelled him toward the pinnacle of the chess world.
In April 2024, Gukesh secured a historic win at the FIDE Candidates Tournament, earning his spot in the World Chess Championship. His exceptional gameplay and strategic brilliance throughout the tournament were clear indicators of his championship potential. His performance captivated chess enthusiasts worldwide, setting the stage for a high-stakes final against Ding Liren.

Speaking about Ding Liren, Gukesh expressed admiration, stating, “He played a very exciting match and showed the champion he is. To see him struggling, under so much pressure, yet fighting back—he’s a real world champion.”
Reflecting on his victory, Gukesh shared, “When he played Rf2, I didn’t realise… When I did realise it, it was the best moment of my life.”
For Gukesh, this achievement is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “I’ve been dreaming about this and living this moment since I was six or seven. Every chess player wants to live this moment – and to be one of them is… I’m living my dream,” he said, overwhelmed by emotion.
