NEW DELHI: In an unexpected diplomatic gesture, U.S. President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his January 20 inauguration. The invitation comes amid escalating trade tensions between the two global superpowers, sparked by speculation of impending tariff hikes on Chinese goods.

The move has raised eyebrows internationally, as relations between Washington and Beijing have been marked by friction over issues ranging from trade to technology. Trump’s second term has been anticipated to adopt an even tougher stance on China, following his campaign promises to prioritize American economic interests and address what he calls “unfair practices” by Beijing.

The invitation was reportedly conveyed through diplomatic channels earlier this week. While the White House has not commented on the matter, the gesture is being interpreted as an effort to reset relations or at least establish a working rapport. If Xi accepts, it would mark a rare appearance by a Chinese leader at a U.S. presidential inauguration, highlighting the potential for dialogue despite the ongoing disputes.

However, analysts remain skeptical about the broader implications of this overture. Reports suggest that Trump’s administration is considering imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods, a move likely to exacerbate tensions. The Chinese economy, already grappling with domestic challenges, faces increasing pressure from U.S. trade policies, which Trump has characterized as necessary to protect American industries.

The timing of the invitation has also drawn attention. Just last week, Chinese state media criticized U.S. policy, accusing Washington of adopting a “cold war mentality.” Meanwhile, Beijing has yet to formally respond to the invitation, with Chinese officials refraining from making any public statements.

Some suggest that Trump’s invitation might be a strategic play to project statesmanship and influence global narratives. It is seen as a calculated move to signal that despite hardline policies, there is openness to engagement on Trump’s terms.

The next steps remain uncertain. Should Xi decline, the rejection could underscore the deepening rift between the two nations. Alternatively, an acceptance might open a channel for dialogue, even if tensions persist on critical issues. As the world watches, this development underscores the complex interplay of diplomacy and power in U.S.-China relations.
