Bangladesh condemns violent protest, flag desecration outside Kolkata’s Deputy High Commission

Bangladesh condemned flag desecration and burning of Prof Yunus’s effigy at Kolkata’s Deputy High Commission on 28 November.

NEW DELHI: The Government of Bangladesh has vehemently condemned the desecration of its national flag and the burning of an effigy of Chief Adviser Prof Yunus during a violent protest outside its Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on 28 November.

In a statement released on 29 November, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) stated, “The protesters set fire to Bangladesh’s national flag and burned an effigy of the Chief Adviser to the government of Bangladesh,”

MoFA urged the Indian government to take appropriate measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The statement added, “Bangladesh condemned all forms of violence and urged the Indian government to ensure the safety and security of the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, as well as other Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India, including its diplomats and non-diplomatic staff”.

The statement expressed deep concern over the violent protest organized by the Kolkata-based Hindu organization ‘Bongio Hindu Jagran’ outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission yesterday afternoon.

The rally, organized by a large group of protesters, turned violent as they breached police barricades and approached the boundary of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission.

“Although the situation seems to be under control at the moment, there is a prevailing sense of insecurity among all the members of the Deputy High Commission”, according to MoFA.

Members of the Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Manch held a rally to the office of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata on Thursday., protesting against atrocities on the Hindu community and the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh.

Protesters marching from Sealdah station to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission were intercepted by the police en route. Some demonstrators clashed with the police and attempted to breach the barricades but were stopped by a significant police presence. Barricades were set up to prevent the protesters from approaching the Deputy High Commission office at Beckbagan in South Kolkata.
