NEW DELHI: Nawab Malik, the prominent Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, is trailing by 12,493 votes in the Mankhurd-Shivajinagar constituency in the ongoing Maharashtra Assembly elections. Malik, who is a former state minister and influential figure in Mumbai’s political landscape, faces a significant deficit of 38,281 votes as the vote count progresses, signaling a tough battle ahead.

Malik, who has represented the Mankhurd-Shivajinagar seat in previous elections, campaigned on issues such as urban development, healthcare, and improving the living standards of Mumbai’s working-class residents. His campaign also highlighted the importance of social justice and welfare programs for the marginalized sections of society. However, the early results suggest that Malik’s established political influence is being challenged in what has traditionally been a stronghold for the NCP.

The constituency of Mankhurd-Shivajinagar, located in the suburbs of Mumbai, is one of the key areas for both the ruling and opposition parties. Malik’s leadership within the NCP has often been seen as a stabilizing factor, especially for communities in the region. Yet, his performance this year is being overshadowed by his opponent, who has capitalized on local issues like unemployment, housing problems, and economic distress in the region.

Malik’s trailing position comes as a surprise to many, as exit polls had predicted a tighter contest. His rival’s campaign focused on addressing the immediate concerns of the electorate, which appears to have resonated with voters more effectively. Malik’s ties to the powerful political machinery of the NCP might not be enough to secure a win this time.
