NEW DELHI: Donald Trump’s decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election has left many Democratic voters in disbelief. Rohan Dua, Executive Editor of The New Indian, spoke to several voters across key states like Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where reactions underscored just how unexpected Trump’s win was for many.

John Barnes, one of the voters interviewed, admitted he hadn’t anticipated such a sweeping victory for Trump. “I saw a lot of young women at the polls and was hoping it would go the other way,” he remarked, noting the déjà vu from the 2016 election. “It’s the same feeling—how could this happen again?” Barnes expressed disappointment, especially with Trump’s religious voter base, feeling that recent controversies might have swayed them. “I hoped their moral judgment would change, but that wasn’t how it went down.”

For Barnes, Trump’s appeal seems rooted in a nostalgia that conservative voters hold dear. “A lot of them want to go back to the good old days of the ’50s and ’60s,” he observed, suggesting that Trump’s platform resonates with voters who yearn for traditional values and a return to simpler times.

Another respondent, William, expected Trump’s victory, having observed the widespread support online and at rallies. “I saw a lot of energy around his campaign on social media platforms like Instagram and X,” he explained. William, who didn’t vote, felt the public connected more with Trump’s direct and unfiltered communication style compared to Harris’s campaign. “People just interacted with Trump more. It’s no surprise to me he won.”

When asked if he had any message for Trump, William’s response was lighthearted: “You’ll be the funniest president I’ll say that.”

The voters’ reactions reveal a mix of shock and understanding of the appeal that helped Trump clinch the win. For many Democrats, Trump’s landslide victory underscores the unexpected twists in this election, and they are left wondering what this outcome will mean for the future of the country.
