‘Laapataa Ladies’ Chosen as India’s Official Entry for Oscars 2025

NEW DELHI: In an exciting announcement made at an event in Chennai, the Film Federation of India has selected Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry to Oscars for the Best Foreign Film category at the 2025 Academy Awards.

Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, Laapataa Ladies features a stellar cast that includes Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, and Nitanshi Goel.

The selection comes amid stiff competition, with 29 films submitted for consideration this year, including notable entries like Hanu-Man, Kalki 2898 AD, Animal, and Good Luck. However, Laapataa Ladies stood out, along with films like Thangalaan and Maidaan, making it to the top five films as per the jury’s deliberations.

A few days ago, Kiran Rao mentioned that it has been her long-cherished dream to see Laapataa Ladies represent India at the Oscars. Now, with the film selected as the official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards, that dream has become a reality.

The jury’s citation lauded the film for its intricate depiction of Indian women, skillfully illustrating the balance between submission and dominance through well-crafted, powerful characters.

The jury remarked, “ Set in a semi-idyllic setting infused with humor, Laapataa Ladies delves into themes of tradition and rebellion, showcasing women who embrace both homemaking and entrepreneurial ambitions.”

They added, “The film resonates not only with Indian audiences but also has a universal appeal, positioning it as a formidable contender on the global stage.”
