Rau’s Tragedy: Tensions escalate as students demand justice

New Delhi: The tragic incident at Rau’s Academy in Rajendra Nagar, where three students tragically drowned in the basement, has sparked significant unrest and calls for justice. The situation escalated when police removed a mattress on which students were sitting during their hunger strike, leading to a heated confrontation. Despite being asked to move to the roadside, the students refused, resulting in the police initially taking away their mattresses. Following strong opposition, the police returned the mattress to the protesting students.

Local shopkeepers in Rajendra Nagar are also feeling the impact of the incident. Since Saturday, when the tragedy occurred, there has been a significant drop in sales. Bhardwaj, a shopkeeper, expressed his concerns, stating, “My only desire is for the students to receive justice.” He noted that his store has been devoid of customers for the past few days, reflecting the broader community’s distress over the incident.

The tragic event has sparked widespread calls for justice and accountability, with many pointing fingers at the authorities for their alleged negligence. Reports indicate that the basement of Rau’s Academy, where the drowning occurred, had water levels up to seven feet, creating a hazardous environment that led to the students’ untimely deaths.

Three students lost their lives when the capital witnessed heavy rains which led to huge water logging. The students were inside the basement of the Rau’s Academy. They were prepping for the UPSC exam and were students of Rau’s Academy.  Water filled in the basement and the students drowned to death.

After the deaths in Rau’s IAS Study Circle, the focus is also on the civic issues in the Old Rajinder Nagar in New Delhi. The area near Rau’s coaching classes is a low-lying one. The area gets flooded in every rainy season and residents in the area have been facing the issue for decades. Residents have told the media that they have constantly complained to authorities about the issue but nothing has happened.

The police have lodged an FIR in this connection and are looking into the matter. The students are demanding the suspension of MCD officials and a CBI inquiry. AAP has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter. Congress and BJP have blamed AAP for the incident.
