NEW DELHI: Following the tragic deaths of three IAS aspirants due to severe flooding in their coaching centre’s basement, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has scheduled an emergency meeting with civic officials.
The meeting will take place at 3 PM today at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters, as confirmed by an official statement.
Key attendees of this meeting will include the MCD Commissioner, the Chief Executive Officer of the Water Board, and the Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department. This meeting aims to address the circumstances leading to the deaths in Old Rajinder Nagar, a prominent coaching hub after last week’s heavy rains caused the basement to flood.

Residents and students have expressed outrage, holding the MCD responsible for the incident. The protesting students and demonstrators call for Mayor Shelly Oberoi’s resignation. The general sentiment among the protesters is that the MCD’s failure to maintain proper drainage systems and flood management contributed significantly to the tragedy.
In an interview with The New Indian, Dr. Munish Raizada, an early member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and President of the Bharatiya Liberal Party (BLP), criticized the MCD and the Mayor for their alleged negligence. Dr. Raizada, who was at the protest site, demanded immediate action against the MCD and particularly against Mayor Shelly Oberoi for what he termed as “criminal negligence.”

Dr Raizada highlighted the broader issues of civic mismanagement, referencing a similar recent incident where a student died due to electrocution following rains. He called for systemic reforms to address these recurring issues and ensure the safety of residents.
