JAMMU: Terrorists targeted an Army truck in the mountainous village of Badnota on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road in the Billawar area of Kathua district on Monday evening.

This marks the second attack in Kathua and the sixth in the region this month. The incident occurred at 3:30 PM, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers and injuries to five others.

The terrorists, believed to be three in number, managed to flee the scene, prompting extensive searches in the surrounding forests.

Like previous attacks in Poonch, the terrorists had positioned themselves atop a hill, launching grenades and automatic gunfire at the vehicle, which had slowed down on the rough, mud-filled road.

The deceased soldiers have been identified as JCO Naib Subedar Anant Singh, Head Constable Jamal Singh, Rifleman Anuj Singh, Rifleman Asarsh Singh, and Naik Vinod Kumar. The injured are Head Constables Arvind Singh, Sujhan Singh, and Gagandeep Singh, Rifleman Kartik, and Naik Sagar Singh.

Heavy rains in the area severely impeded search operations, despite reinforcements from the Army, police, and paramilitary forces. Elite Army para-commandos have been airlifted to the area to launch cordon and search operations in the forests.

A senior police official told The New Indian, “The terrorists involved were foreign operatives, primarily from Pakistan, affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) or Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). They were equipped with advanced weapons, including M4 Carbines, and had a local guide familiar with the forest routes.”
