NEW DELHI:  In a significant development aimed at addressing longstanding issues between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Chief Ministers Chandrababu Naidu and Revanth Reddy met for the first time since the states’ bifurcation a decade ago. The meeting, held at Mahatma Jyothi Rao Phule Praja Bhavan, was marked by a cordial atmosphere filled with flower decorations, exchanged gifts, and a dinner that set the stage for serious discussions.

Revanth Reddy presented Naidu with a copy of “Naa Godava” (My Issue/Problem), a poignant collection of poems by the celebrated Kaloji Narayana Rao. In return, Naidu gifted Revanth a replica of Lord Venkateshwara, symbolising goodwill and shared reverence.

The two-hour meeting, initially planned for two days, concluded with a decision to adopt a three-phased approach to resolve issues arising from the 2014 bifurcation. Key topics included the division of public sector assets valued at around Rs 1.4 lakh crore, river water sharing, and pending power sector dues.

Both leaders discussed additional matters such as Telangana’s request for a share in Andhra’s ports and coastline and the re-merger of Panchayati villages. Naidu proposed retaining some government buildings in Hyderabad, while Revanth offered alternative land for construction.

Significantly, the meeting addressed new cooperative initiatives, including a joint task force to combat drug trafficking and cyber-crimes. Despite past conflicts, this meeting underscores a renewed commitment to collaboration and resolving disputes.

Political analysts view this encounter as a potential turning point, reflecting a strategic move by both leaders to advance their respective state interests while mending fences. As Andhra Pradesh and Telangana navigate these complex issues, the focus now shifts to how effectively these discussions translate into tangible resolutions.
