Dibrugarh (ASSAM) : In the middle of a tea garden, in the twilight of the evening sun, Raja Ram and Ajay Mumda, each a supporter of Congress and BJP respectively, shared their preferences on the winnability of Sarbananda Sonowal, Union minister of port, shipping & waterways and former Chief Minister of Assam. Sonowal’s contest has put him in the spotlight of several tribal communities that co-exist in this part of Assam. Many of them sell fish or work in tea estate.

Amid the serene ambience, Ajay Mumda, a staunch BJP supporter, confidently said, “BJP has done a speechless job by providing houses, gas cylinders, Orunodoi Scheme and other benefits. I am sure BJP will win this election.”

Sharab, another resident and fish seller is optimistic about the BJP’s victory in Assam. While waiting for election results, he emphasises the ongoing development in the state and hopes to see Modi as PM. “We will get to know who will win after the election but it seems BJP will again win in Assam. I want to see Modi as PM because development is happening in Assam,” he told The New Indian.

Jairaj Sharma, a retired hospital worker, criticised the BJP’s efforts in Tinksukia village as “half-hearted.” However, he still predicts BJP’s win due to Congress’s lack of action. Pointing towards his red brick, half-constructed house with a tin shade on the roof  he said, “BJP has done half-hearted work in Tinksukia village but BJP will win in Assam because Congress has done nothing here.”

Meanwhile, in the marketplace, a group of pork meat sellers stand firmly behind PM Modi and reject the Congress legacy. They trust BJP’s commitment to progress and development in Assam.
