Ponnani: In a disturbing incident of political obstruction, Nivedita Subramanian, the BJP candidate from the Ponnani constituency, faced opposition and threats while campaigning at a law college in Kuttippuram, Malappuram. The incident occurred at the KMCT Law College, where Subramanian, representing the BJP, was met with resistance from students allegedly associated with the Muslim Students Federation (MSF), the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League.

The altercation unfolded on Thursday afternoon as Subramanian and her campaign team visited the KMCT management college before proceeding to the law college to seek votes. Upon their arrival, a group of students confronted the campaigners, questioning their presence on the campus. Tensions escalated, with the students reportedly expressing hostility towards what they termed as “communal forces” entering the college premises.

In response, Subramanian attempted to defuse the situation, engaging in dialogue with the protesting students. However, the confrontation persisted, leading to verbal altercations and warnings directed at the candidate and her team. Eventually, Subramanian and her supporters were compelled to leave the campus amid the escalating tensions and perceived threats.

Expressing her dismay over the incident, Subramanian condemned the obstruction of her campaign activities within her constituency. She characterized the episode as reflective of the prevailing politics of intolerance and hatred, lamenting the growing normalization of such behaviour.

“The group of students was mocking us and questioning my candidacy in this constituency. I have not entered politics to confront such hostility. This is indicative of the rising tide of intolerance and divisiveness in our political landscape,” stated Subramanian.

Meanwhile, BJP state president K Surendran voiced his shock over the incident, emphasizing that the party would not remain passive in the face of such obstructive tactics. He criticized the Congress party, alleging that it not only disregarded women candidates but also condoned acts of intimidation and aggression against them.

“The Congress party has not only sidelined women from contesting but has now resorted to obstructing and attacking women candidates from other parties. If such actions persist, there will be repercussions,” warned Surendran during a media briefing in Kalpetta.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with netizens condemning the act as a manifestation of political intolerance. Subramanian, however, refrained from filing a formal complaint, opting to consult with party leaders before deciding on further action.
