Baba Ramdev’s apology falls short: SC unimpressed with Patanjali’s actions 

NEW DELHI: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has issued an “unconditional apology” before the Supreme Court for violating the court’s order regarding misleading advertisements related to Patanjali’s medicinal products. However, the court has expressed dissatisfaction with the apology, considering it mere “lip service.” The matter will be further heard on April 10.

The Supreme Court sternly warned Ramdev, emphasising that court orders must be respected. The court had previously instructed Patanjali Ayurved to cease all electronic and print advertisements containing misleading information about their medicines. Despite this, the company was found to violate the court’s order.

“You have to abide by the undertaking given to the court; you have broken every barrier,” the court said. Senior Advocate Balbir Singh for Ramdev responded, “If the court wishes for us to mend our ways, we will.”

The case originated when the Indian Medical Association (IMA) filed a petition against Patanjali, alleging that their advertisements made false and misleading claims.

The IMA pointed out that some of these ads portrayed allopathy and doctors negatively, suggesting that medical professionals were succumbing to illness despite using modern medicines. Ramdev and Patanjali’s managing director, Acharya Balkrishna, will appear in court for the next hearing.

On February 27, the top court directed the company to stop all electronic and print advertisements of its medicines giving misleading information with immediate effect. It had also pulled up the Centre for not taking action and said they were sitting with their eyes closed.

“This is very unfortunate. The government will have to take some immediate action,” the bench had said.
