NEW DELHI: Kolkata Police have launched an investigation into an incident where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sustained a significant injury to her forehead after slipping and falling at her residence on Thursday.

The incident has raised questions about a possible security lapse, prompting the police to tighten security measures at the CM’s residence in Kolkata. According to sources, Banerjee informed Kolkata Police Commissioner Vinit Goel that she was pushed from behind before the fall. She hit her head against a glass showcase, resulting in a deep cut on her forehead. The 69-year-old leader was rushed to the state-run SSKM Hospital, where she received four stitches on her head before being discharged.

According to reports,  moments before the accident, Banerjee was at an event to inaugurate a statue of former minister Subrata Mukherjee at Gariahat at Ekdalia Evergreen Club. Dr Manimoy Bandopadhyay, director of SSKM Hospital, stated, “She had a cerebral concussion and had a sharp cut over her forehead and nose which was bleeding profusely.” Despite being advised to remain admitted for observation, Banerjee opted to go home. However, she will continue to receive medical treatment as per the advice of doctors.

Several politicians and leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed their wishes for Banerjee’s speedy recovery. Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray shared that Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar inquired about Banerjee’s health, expressing deep concern. West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also extended their wishes for Banerjee’s swift recovery. In response to the incident, Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the hospital and assured that Banerjee was receiving the best medical treatment.

The news of Banerjee’s injury sparked reactions on social media, with politicians from various opposition parties expressing shock and sending their prayers for her recovery. Former Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, and former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti were among those who wished Banerjee a speedy recovery. As investigations continue into the circumstances of the incident, Banerjee’s well-being remains a matter of public concern.
