According to sources, Rahul had complained of discomfort in his quads despite multiple scans showing no major damage.
DELHI: India opener KL Rahul’s participation in the fifth and final Test against England in Dharamshala is in doubt after he flew to the UK for further assessment of his quadriceps injury. Rahul, who has been one of India’s most consistent performers in the series, had missed the last two Tests in Rajkot and Ahmedabad due to the same issue.
According to sources, Rahul had complained of discomfort in his quads despite multiple scans showing no major damage. He had undergone surgery for a sports hernia in Germany last year and was concerned about aggravating his injury. He was advised by the doctor who treated him in England to travel to the UK for a personal check-up.

The BCCI medical team is hoping to get some clarity on Rahul’s condition by March 2, four days before the start of the final Test. The team management is keen to have Rahul back in the playing XI, as he has scored 287 runs in four innings at an average of 71.75, including a century and two fifties. He also formed a solid opening partnership with Rohit Sharma, who has scored 378 runs in six innings at an average of 75.60.
In Rahul’s absence, India have tried two different options at the top of the order – Rajat Patidar and Shubman Gill – but neither of them could make an impact. Patidar managed only 63 runs in six innings, while Gill scored 28 runs in two innings. India is also reluctant to release Patidar for the Ranji Trophy semifinal, as he is the only backup opener in the squad.

India have already secured the series 3-1 after winning the fourth Test in Ahmedabad by an innings and 25 runs. However, they are still eyeing a clean sweep and maximum points in the World Test Championship. England, on the other hand, are looking to salvage some pride and end their disappointing tour on a high note.
