25th Kargil Vijay Diwas: PM Modi to launch Shinkun La Tunnel Project

In addition to commemorating Kargil Vijay Diwas, PM Modi will virtually carry out the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project which will provide all-weather connectivity to Leh, enhancing both civilian and military logistics in the region.

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26th July 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Kargil War Memorial to honour the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War. The visit, scheduled for around 9:20 AM, will see the Prime Minister paying homage to the bravehearts who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

In addition to commemorating Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Modi will virtually carry out the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project. The project includes the construction of a 4.1 km long twin-tube tunnel at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu – Padum – Darcha Road. This ambitious project is set to provide all-weather connectivity to Leh, significantly enhancing both civilian and military logistics in the region.

Upon completion, the Shinkun La Tunnel will become the highest tunnel in the world, marking a significant engineering achievement for India. The tunnel will ensure swift and efficient movement of armed forces and equipment, which is crucial for the strategic defense of the nation. Additionally, the tunnel is expected to foster economic and social development in the region of Ladakh by improving accessibility and connectivity.

Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every year on July 26 in India, commemorates the victory of Operation Vijay in 1999. This day marks the end of the Kargil War between India and Pakistan, which started in May 1999. During this conflict, Indian forces successfully reclaimed key positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir that had been infiltrated by Pakistani soldiers and terrorists. The day honours the bravery of the soldiers who gave their lives defending the nation and celebrates the determination and strength of the Indian armed forces. Kargil Vijay Diwas is a tribute to their sacrifices and reaffirms the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and integrity.
