The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah must take responsibility for the gang rape of a woman by two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans at the India-Bangladesh border.

The 23-year-old woman was trying to cross the border with her five-year-old daughter when she was raped in front of the minor child. The accused — SP Chero holding the post of ASI, and Altab Hossain – have been arrested and sent to police custody for seven days.

Rattled by the incident, the BSF has sought a report from the Superintendent of Police of North 24 Parganas. A TMC delegation, which visited the spot and also met the victim’s family on Monday, demanded an immediate inquiry into the incident.

The rape, which happened at the Jeetpur border outpost, has sent shockwaves across West Bengal.

Senior TMC leader and minister Dr Shashi Panja, a delegation member, said, “We visited the place where the rape took place. The sexual atrocity (was) committed by the BSF personnel on a woman in front of her minor child. We condemn the incident and ask the Union Home Minister to take responsibility for it.” “He takes credit for the central arm forces, but why is he not speaking against or condemning the incident?” Panja asked.

Locals told The New Indian over the phone that they have heard that the incident happened when the woman was returning home after doing farming work in Jeetpur area near the Bagda border.
