MOHALI: After scoring an unbeaten 175, Ravindra Jadeja came good with the ball and propelled India a victory by an innings and 222 runs against Sri Lanka on Day 3 of the 1st Test at Mohali.
The visitors, after following on, were skittled out for 178 in their second innings. Earlier in the day, the hosts had dismissed them for 174 in the first innings and enforced the follow-on.
India had declared their first innings for 574-8.
Jadeja was ably supported by offspinner R Ashwin who snaffled four wickets in the second innings and smothered the visitors. During the match, he also became the second highest wicket-taker for India in Tests, surpassing Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 scalps.
Sri Lankan batsmen looked miserably inadequate against Jadeja and Ashwin, and fell like ninepins. Only the wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella showed some resistance and remained unbeaten on 51 in the second innings.
This is the 12th Test defeat of Sri Lanka in India out of 21 matches. They are yet to win a Test on Indian soil.
The second Test will begin from March 12 at Bengaluru.
