The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has begun the counselling process for admission to IITs, NITs, and other top engineering institutes.
NEW DELHI: The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has begun the counseling process for admission to IITs, NITs, and other top engineering institutes. This vast process includes 59,917 seats at 121 colleges. The deadline for students to submit their preferences is June 18 at 5 p.m. Students can choose from 865 branches provided in these 121 colleges.
Amit Ahuja, a career counseling expert at Allen Career Institute, emphasised the significance of the choice-locking process. He said, “If students do not lock their filled college choices within the given time frame, their last saved choices will be auto-locked.”

On June 14, JoSAA released the first mock seat allocation, which provided insights based on the choices made by the students. A total of 156,430 students participated in this round, submitting 16,813,321 choices. This mock allocation helps students improve their chances of getting their preferred branches and colleges.
Expert Ahuja offered crucial advice for students following the first mock allocation. “After the first mock seat allocation, students should carefully review their filled choices. They must check if any higher-priority choices are available above the allocated branch and ensure that no lower-priority choices are incorrectly placed below the allocated branch. Once the choices are locked, no further changes can be made,” he said.
The JoSAA counseling will proceed through six rounds. Given the dynamic nature of the process, thousands of students are expected to adjust their choices before the second mock seat allocation, which is anticipated to provide a more accurate reflection of their potential placements based on rank. The second mock seat allocation will be published on June 17.
The IIT-NIT JoSAA Counselling 2024 timetable contains numerous important dates. On June 15, the first simulated seat allocation was displayed, providing pupils an early look at their future placements. The second simulated seat allocation will be presented on June 17 while the deadline for completing and locking in choices, registering, and paying the seat acceptance fee is June 18. Assigned seats will be reconciled, verified, and validated on June 19. The initial round of seat allocation will take place on June 20, 2024.
